Papuan coffee refers to coffee grown in the easternmost province of Indonesia. Papua is known for its rich biodiversity and favourable climate, which contributes to production of high-quality beans. The most common varieties of Papuan coffee include Arabica and Robusta. This rubiaceae plant is highly regarded for its distinctive flavour profile. Arabica coffee can be found in highland Papua which lies between 900- 2300 masl, while Robusta is mainly in lowland areas (0 -800 masl).
In previous time, people know highland coffee only from Jayawijaya regency and called Wamena coffee, however through the effort of some roaster and coffee industry actors, now people know the coffee with more variant such as Tiom, Sabin, Kurima, Tangma, Kurulu, Modio coffee etc. Robusta coffee is in Yapen Island which is known as Ambaidiru Coffee. It also can be found in Genyem (Jayapura regency) and Waris area (Keerom regency).
Small scale Papuan farmers grow coffee using traditional and sustainable methods (organic coffee) and the system is intercropping with other crops which contribute to conservation of area. The journey of coffee from beans to beverage through a lot of processes which create supply chains. The process of coffee depends on the post harvesting process, roasting and cupping.
Papuan Arabica coffee is described as having a medium to full body, with notes of fruitiness, floral, herbal and hint of sweetness. Meanwhile, Robusta coffee represents a higher caffeine and bitterness taste than Arabica. In post harvesting, Papuan coffee mainly processes through wet processes including handpicking, pre-cleaning, pulping, fermentation, washing and drying. The production of coffee contributes to the improvement of the local economy. It can be denied that Papuan coffee still faces challenges in each key point of the supply chain. However, the collaboration between small scale, government and other stakeholders can contribute to the sustainability of the coffee supply chain.
