1-Day Training Workshop For GKI Sunday School Teachers

My second community development (comdev) project in 2025 was a one-day training workshop for GKI Sunday School teachers. Conducted as a group project, I collaborated with Romibo Rumaikewi. The project was held on 9 August 2025 and targeted Sunday School teachers from several GKI churches. During the workshop, we introduced a module designed to assist Sunday School teachers in introducing English to children through songs, prayers, Bible stories, and Bible verses.
I chose this project because, as a member of the GKI community and an English tutor, I believe that contextual learning is a highly effective approach to teaching English. Based on my experience, many Papuan students have limited vocabulary, which often makes them feel intimidated or afraid of learning English. To address this issue, I wanted to help children learn English in a contextual and familiar environment. Since teaching English individually to a large number of children is challenging, this project became an opportunity to guide Sunday school teachers by introducing effective methods for integrating English into their teaching within the GKI community.
After the project was conducted, the Sunday school teachers gained a better understanding that English can be introduced to Sunday school children through songs, Bible stories, prayers, and Bible verses. In addition, the teachers received a module that they could take back and use in their respective GKI communities to support their teaching activities.

Based on survey responses from five participants, the workshop received very positive feedback. All respondents, who were Sunday school teachers from several GKI churches, stated that the training was useful, the materials were clear, and the content was relevant to their teaching context. Participants felt confident applying English through songs, prayers, and Bible stories, and all planned to use the materials in their classes. The most appreciated aspects of the workshop were prayers, songs, Bible stories, and direct practice. Suggestions for improvement included adding more creative materials, teaching aids, and involving more churches in future workshops.
The challenges I faced during this project were related to communication with my project members and the preparation of the project report. Due to these issues, there were some items and details that were not included in the final report.
Through this project, I learned that the participating Sunday school teachers were excited about the workshop and eager to use the module. This indicates that the module is practical, user-friendly, and suitable for Sunday school teachers.
Overall, this Community Development project successfully achieved its objectives by equipping Sunday school teachers with contextual and practical methods for introducing English to children. The positive responses from participants show that this project has the potential to be developed further and implemented in a wider GKI community in the future.
